Freelancing & Changes Ahead

The first piece of news is that I've gone freelance. After five and a half years of working on Cloud Dance Festival, and working closely with a number of our choreographers in that time, I'm now available on a freelance basis for anything from admin to producing, especially marketing, publicity and management. And especially producing. Please.

Dance Bloggers & Reviewers Sought

Cloud Dance Festival is currently seeking bloggers and/or reviewers for our website.

Our aim is to make contemporary dance and ballet more accessible to people who normally wouldn't watch either, and our writing section is our way of continuing this between festivals. As our current writers have gone somewhat quiet, we are looking for more bloggers and reviewers to join our team.

Welcome to our bloggers

We'd like to give a very warm welcome to our new bloggers Celia Moran and Kelly Crocker, who have recently started writing for us - and we hope to add several more writers over the upcoming weeks. I'm also intending to start a regular "What To See" column, and may be persuaded to write about other topics too.

Photography Exhibition

As photography is such a large part of our festivals - you only need to have a look at our latest programme to see how many photographers are involved! - we decided that it's way past time we held an exhibition to showcase the work of the photographers who work for, or visit Cloud Dance Festival. Thankfully, Pleasance Theatre has agreed to let us appropriate most of their wall space, and we've been working with our photographers to select photos for you to enjoy when you come to our festival.

Tommy Franzén in indie ballet at Cloud Dance Festival

Versatile hip hop sensation Tommy Franzén will be taking over the role created by Royal Ballet's Thomas Whitehead, in Royal Ballet soloist Kristen McNally's "indie ballet" work 'Don't Blame The Player, Blame The Game'. This will hopefully be the first of many collaborations between Tommy Franzén and Kristen McNally.

Taciturn Are Back!

We are thrilled beyond words that Taciturn will be part of Firefly - unfortunately, the news came right after our press release went out yesterday!

As some of the company will be on holiday during the festival, we will be presenting a solo by Jennifer Hale, and we've heard many good things about it!

Taciturn will be performing on the Sunday - it will be their fifth festival and seventh performance, and it just seemed wrong to do a festival without them... !

ROYAL BALLET SOLOIST JOINS CREAM OF CONTEMPORARY CHOREOGRAPHERS AT CLOUD DANCE FESTIVAL’S FIREFLY

Royal Ballet soloist Kristen McNally is amongst a crop of leading choreographers and dance companies showcasing their work at Cloud Dance Festival’s twelfth festival, Firefly, which runs from July 22-24th at the Pleasance Theatre in Islington and which features works from 21 different companies.

Kristen McNally, who is best known outside of the Royal Ballet for her cutting-edge brand of "indie ballet", presents her work Don’t Blame it on the Player, Blame it on The Game, originally performed by fellow Royal Ballet soloist Thomas Whitehead. McNally is well-known for her innovative ballet-contemporary collaborations, having recently led Ballet Rocks at the Move It! show in March as well as her interactive performance to Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy at the Apple Store in London’s Covent Garden in April.

Kristen McNally is also amongst 15 top emerging choreographers – including James Cousins, who will also be performing twice at Firefly – to have been shortlisted for the prestigious New Adventures Choreographer Award 2011, created in celebration of Matthew Bourne’s 50th birthday last year.

As part of Cloud Dance Festival's inclusion of modern and contemporary ballet, we will be showcasing new works from emerging contemporary ballet choreographers Edd Mitton and Richard Bermange, neoclassical work from Newcastle-based company Exquisite Corpse | Dance Theatre, and rising contemporary ballet stars Diciembre Dance Group.

Acclaimed contemporary dancer Devaraj Thimmaiah, of Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company and formerly of Tavaziva Dance, has been described as “having the rare performance quality of combining machismo, elegance and fluidity" (Graham Watts, Resolution Review). Thimmaiah has trained in Capoeira and several styles of contemporary dance and has made appearances for fashion designers, Bollywood singers and local and national satellite TV in his native India. He will be performing his duet Arranged Marriage which was first seen at The Place’s Resolution earlier in the year.

Ross Cooper, one of Scotland’s most popular choreographers, will be presenting his new work in an exciting partnership with Aikaterina Chatzaki. Cooper is best known as the founder and artistic director of The Curve Foundation, and is the man responsible for helping to launch a number of prominent choreographers' careers, including that of Royal Ballet’s Jonathan Watkins.

Other well-known names making an appearance include Sol Dans, whose powerful choreography was recently seen on the BBC hit programme So You Think You Can Dance; 2011 Blueprint Bursary winner, the Cameroon-born Joseph Toonga, and a new duet from the multi-faceted Gerrard Martin, a former member of Ballet Black, Phoenix Dance Company and Aletta Collins Dance Company, who has also danced with many commercial artists and bands, including Lionel Ritchie, Misteeq and Shaggy. Mark Smith, who recently choreographed the box office successes Shoes (Sadler's Wells) and Iolanthe (Union Theatre / Wilton's Music Hall) is presenting his new company Deaf Men Dancing.

Fans of the legendary Hofesh Shechter will be treated to a performance by James Finnemore, one of his dancers, in addition to Udifydance Company, an all-male dance company currently being mentored by Hofesh.

Further highlights include fierce choreography from new Laban graduate Charlie Dixon Dance Company, Van Huynh Company dancer Dom Czapski and returning Cloud Dance Festival favourites Slanjayvah Danza and Taciturn.

Please view this page for details of all 21 participating companies.

Firefly Lineup

After several months, and the most applications we've ever received for a festival, we can finally announce our new lineup for Firefly, our first festival for a year! Firefly will be held at Pleasance Theatre in Islington on 22 - 24 July.

Of course the most exciting part of our lineup is Kristen McNally, a Royal Ballet soloist, presenting her unique style of "indie ballet" on both Saturday and Sunday. Even more exciting is that it'll be performed by Tommy Franzén, of ZooNation and BBC's So You Think You Can Dance fame. We'll also have Devaraj Thimmaiah, previously of Tavaziva Dance and currently of Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, whose work Arranged Marriage was described by Graham Watts as "a powerful, superbly performed, duet" when performed at The Place's Resolution! earlier this year.
