Mikkel Buda Svak was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he studied the modern dance techniques of Jose Limon and Lester Horton, New Dance techniques and Contact Improvisation. Mikkel is autodidact in Lighting Design and Technical Theatre, and alongside his dance training worked with a number of leading theatre companies in Denmark as a lighting technician. In 1998 he moved to London where he trained at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, and graduated in 2001. He then formed NMO Dance Company, which has since become S-V-A-K.

As a choreographer Mikkel’s focus is on character-based choreography and use of mime as a choreographic tool. His work is often based on a central social theme as a starting point, but frequently moves towards a more abstract style, focusing on the movement and integration of this with the theatre as a space towards the final result; allowing the rhythm and structure of the movement portray the character on stage.

 Petite Grandeur

A contemporary Horton/Limon based solo piece, exploring the relationship between rhythm and theatrical expression. The piece is character-based for the purpose of my choreographic method, although intended as abstract in performance. The main focus is drawn from recent reactions to the death by stabbing of Harry Potter actor Robert Knox in may 2008, although not an attempt to relate this story in itself.

Choreographed and performed by Mikkel Svak.
