Fire - Shadow - Silence

The fire of a woman without fear
The shadow of an artist robbed of her vision
The silence of emptiness

Tina Modotti, a fragile life at the mercy of a changing world

Tina Modotti was a revolutionary photographer, born into a poor but politicised family in Udine, Northern Italy in 1896.  From 1920’s Hollywood movie studios, to the post-revolutionary Mexico of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and the battle fields of the Spanish Civil War, her life crossed many of the most tumultuous and world changing events of the twentieth century.  Yet she was only 46 when she died a sad and lonely death in Mexico City in 1942.

Contemporary dancer and choreographer Jessie Brett has taken the life of Tina Modotti as inspiration for her theatrical performance piece for dancers Louise Mochia and Elsa Petit.  With specially commissioned music composed by Jered Sorkin, text by Margie Douglas, and original visual imagery, FIRE-SHADOW-SILENCE is Jessie’s unique response to Tina Modotti’s extraordinary life.

FIRE- SHADOW- SILENCE was performed at The Place Theatre London on 14 January as part of RESOLUTION ’10 dance festival.

Winner of Welsh Independent Dance’s DANCE BYTES 2009, FIRE-SHADOW-SILENCE will also be performed in the Weston Studio, Wales Millennium Centre, on 16 and 17 March 2010.
