Two Shows One Night – interview with choreographer Gary Clarke

b2ap3_thumbnail_garyclarke.jpg
Two of London’s biggest dance houses, Greenwich Dance Agency and The Place Theatre will be presenting work by choreographer Gary Clarke this friday. This will have the choreographer heroically hurtling back and forth, in a whirlwind of madness from one end of the city to the other. Which had me intrigued… Two Shows. One Night. Madness, surely? So I caught up with Gary earlier this week and asked him about it. Here’s what he had... Continue reading

Bowie Got Me Thinking

So recent months have seen the return of the likes of The Rolling Stones and David Bowie. Music royalty, if you will. Or perhaps, simply: legends. Bowie's ‘comeback’ single 'Where are We Now' was met by a mixed reaction from the British public, but was of course hugely successful in terms of sales, reaching number 1 in the iTunes chart on the day of its release (although whether or not this is a failsafe way... Weekly Roundup: 13 April

We interrupt this silence to rave about all the good shows which are on in London over the next week. I'd stopped writing these roundups as it seemed a bit silly for only one or two shows every now and then, but over the next week, we are truly spoiled. Which is a really really good thing if you've seen, or if you're about to see Midnight Express. 13 April: Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre Sadler's... Continue reading

In conversation with Liv Lorent

b2ap3_thumbnail_Liv-CULTURE-4.jpg
“For me, the quest is to emotionally move someone rather than impress or perplex them”.  Having been totally mesmerised by balletLORENT’s latest show Rapunzel, Zoe Parker finally caught up with choreographer/director Liv Lorent, and here is what she had to say. As a choreographer, what has influenced you? When I look at the body, I know some things about it, but I wasn’t influenced that much by my extensive dance training because I was never... Between Heaven and Earth: Kaet Dance Ensemble

“See, this is our time to dance. It is our way of celebrating life. It's the way it was in the beginning. It's the way it's always been. It's the way it should be now.” - Footloose (1984) Footloose is a big movie favourite of mine - the music, the story and the fashion. However I love this movie most of all for one of the most honest movie dance scenes, where Kevin... Continue reading

Deborah Friedes Galli: Dance In Israel

Deborah Friedes Galli runs the website www.danceinisrael.com, an English website which has all you need to know about dance in Israel. She is also my teacher who inspires me every week with her knowledge of not just dance in Israel but dance in general. Here is an interview with my inspirer: Deborah Friedes Galli. Please explain a bit about yourself. When I was doing my undergraduate degree at Brown University, I started studying American dance... Continue reading

To Do...

I love to write lists. I write lists for most things in my life. I'll write a list of things I need to list if I can. I've even put writing this blog on a list. I don't think this is because I'll forget to write it otherwise, I think it's simply because then I can tick it off my list, and feel like I've achieved something.   Amongst all my lists, I've been thinking... Interview: Matthew Robinson

Matthew Robinson, a London Contemporary Dance School graduate and a Scottish Dance Theatre dancer, is returning to Resolution! on Saturday 19 January, with his first new choreography after two well-received collaborations with fellow Scottish Dance Theatre dancer Toby Fitzgibbons. Having featured him as one of the people to watch in this year's Resolution!, we caught up with him to find out more about Vacant Skin, and about his work. You can find out more about... A Very Cool Evening

Winter Portraits: an evening of choreographies and dancing both by the professionals and by all. As a Londoner (I feel I can officially call myself a Londoner after 10 years of London living), I strive to wear the most stylish vintage clothes, know the trendiest unknown bars and go to “cool” events. Last night I had achieved the Tel Aviv equivalent. Winter Portraits is part of Portraits, founded by Yarden Raz (choreographer and dancer in... Continue reading

Rehearsals in Words: CoCoDanse December 2012

December for me saw the beginnings, and eventually the bulk of, rehearsals for CoCo Danse's Resolution! 2013 piece, 'SetBack'. Wanting to document the process and experience that myself, the other dancers, the musician and the choreographer were having, I asked each person in the team for a word to sum up each rehearsal. A harder task than you might think, what follows is those words, and my thoughts at each stage of the process. 'SetBack'... Continue reading
